Background of the study
Interpreter training is critical for ensuring the effective delivery of Yoruba language services in Ibadan, where interpreters facilitate communication across legal, medical, educational, and media sectors. Training programs aim to develop linguistic accuracy, cultural sensitivity, and domain-specific knowledge among interpreters (Akinola, 2023). In Ibadan, where Yoruba is both a medium of instruction and a cultural cornerstone, the quality of interpretation has significant social and professional implications. Current training initiatives include workshops, simulation exercises, and certification courses designed to enhance professional competency. However, disparities in training quality, limited practical exposure, and a lack of standardized curricula persist, leading to inconsistent interpreter performance. This study investigates the effectiveness of interpreter training programs for Yoruba language services by reviewing training modules, interviewing trainees and experienced interpreters, and analyzing performance outcomes. The goal is to identify best practices and propose recommendations that will improve training efficacy and service delivery in Ibadan.

Statement of the problem
Despite existing interpreter training programs in Ibadan, inconsistent training quality and insufficient practical experience result in variable interpreter performance (Akinola, 2023). These deficiencies can lead to errors in translation that adversely affect service delivery across critical sectors.

Objectives of the study:

  1. To evaluate current interpreter training programs.
  2. To identify gaps in training and practical exposure.
  3. To recommend improvements for enhanced interpreter performance.

Research questions:

  1. How effective are current training programs?
  2. What challenges do trainees face?
  3. What improvements can be made?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it aims to enhance interpreter training quality for Yoruba language services, thereby improving communication and service delivery in Ibadan. The findings will assist training institutions and policymakers in developing more effective curricula (Akinola, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:
Focused on interpreter training programs in Ibadan for Yoruba services; other regions and languages are excluded.

Definitions of terms:

  • Interpreter training: Programs aimed at developing interpretation skills.
  • Yoruba language services: Professional communication services in Yoruba.
  • Interpreter performance: The effectiveness of interpreters in conveying messages.
